Bradley to Environment, Gravelle to Natural Resources By Kate Harries AWARE Simcoe October 20 2011 Jim Bradley returns to the ministry where he made his name - does he still have the drive he showed in the 1980s? It will be needed, to address the waste issue. The Liberals' failure to show leadership on Extended Producer Responsibility in their last term was a major disappointment.
Michael Gravelle, previously the pro-mining minister of mines, goes to natural resources and forestry (new name for the MNR). What does this mean for the mega-quarry, dramatically mishandled by his predecessor Linda Jeffrey? What does this mean for the forests? Bob Chiarelli retains infrastructure (which includes the Simcoe County growth plan) but he now also heads the transportation ministry, a major responsibility. The task of sorting out the mess that is the Green Energy Act goes to Chris Bentley, who kept out of trouble during his years as attorney-general. Kathleen Wynne's appointment to municipal affairs includes aboriginal affairs, previously part of the attorney general's portfolio. The Ipperwash inquiry recommended that aboriginal affairs be a stand-alone ministry with its own minister; it never happened.
